The final match of the Intercontinental Cup in Qatar has concluded. In the decisive game, PSG and Flamengo drew 1-1 during regular and extra time, but the Parisian club emerged victorious in the penalty shootout.
PSG started the game with more attacking efforts. Following a pass from Vitinha, Joao Neves created a dangerous situation with a low shot.
Later, Fabian Ruiz attempted a long-range chip shot from outside the penalty area, seemingly scoring, but VAR disallowed the goal, determining that the ball had gone out of play prior to the attempt. The deadlock was broken in the 38th minute.
Desire Doue sent a sharp pass into the penalty area from the right flank. As the goalkeeper attempted to catch the ball, a mistake allowed Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to capitalize and slot the ball into the empty net from close range — 1-0. Midway through the second half, Flamengo equalized via a penalty.
In the 62nd minute, Jorginho converted from the penalty spot with a precise shot to the bottom right corner. Matvei Safonov dived in the opposite direction and was unable to save it — 1-1. During the remaining time, PSG made several attempts to score a winner: Barcola's shot was blocked after a pass, and Vitinha and Kvaratskhelia failed to finish their chances.
As a result, the match extended into extra time. Both sides created opportunities in the additional period: Dembele and Barcola delivered dangerous shots, and Nuno Mendes tried from distance, but goalkeepers and defenders effectively nullified the threats.
The score remained unchanged — 1-1. The winner was decided in the penalty shootout.
PSG secured the victory with more accurate penalties, winning 2-1 and clinching the Intercontinental Cup. It is worth noting that Safonov made an impressive four saves during the penalty series.
