AFC launches Nations League: A new stage in Asian football

The Asian Football Confederation has officially announced the establishment of a new and regular competition among national teams - the Nations League. The historic decision was announced through an official statement held in Kuala Lumpur on December 21.

According to reports, the new tournament will be held within the framework of FIFA days. The main goal is to improve the quality of matches between national teams, make the international calendar clear and stable, while reducing logistics and financial costs. Currently, the exact format, regulations, and start date of the competition are being developed.

AFC Secretary General Datuk Seri Windsor John noted that the League of Nations is a logical continuation of the long-term strategy aimed at ensuring the sustainable and systematic development of 47 national associations that are part of the confederation.

"This initiative was approved after extensive analysis and consultations with regional football federations," the Secretary General said.

It is noted that the new league will allow national teams to regularly compete with rivals close to their level. This makes the teams' preparation for such prestigious competitions as the Asian Cup and World Cup qualifiers more effective.

The project was also positively received by the AFC's commercial partners. They expect the League of Nations to increase audience interest and serve to enhance the media appeal of national teams. According to the Confederation, this tournament will strengthen the balance of competition in Asian football and open the way for high-quality competitions for all regions.
