Madrid's “Real” club, after starting the season brightly, has faced a certain crisis and lost its lead in the Spanish La Liga standings. Recently, numerous rumors have emerged regarding the future of Real's head coach Xabi Alonso.
The publication “Euro-Football.Ru” reflects on what decision might be the most prudent for Real's management in the current situation. Xabi Alonso — a promising figure in football coaching — has already proven his capabilities at Bayer Leverkusen: he managed to disrupt Bayern Munich's long-standing dominance in the Bundesliga.
The German team could not have achieved an unbeaten streak of 51 matches otherwise. Overall, during the 2023/24 season, Alonso's side lost only once — an extraordinary result.
The Spanish coach rightfully received an offer from Real, but things have not gone entirely as he hoped so far. Why should the club avoid rushing the decision? It is no secret that Carlo Ancelotti allowed too much freedom to Real's star-studded squad during his tenure.
The Italian coach acted more as a caring father figure rather than a strict manager for the players. Unfortunately, this ultimately proved to be his downfall.
When Alonso arrived, the situation at the club changed completely, which naturally did not sit well with the leading players. Vinicius has expressed dissatisfaction with being substituted during games, while Rodrigo is unhappy about getting limited playing time.
Overall, the team’s experienced players are also disgruntled by the amount of playing time given to Güler and the recently signed Mastantuono. At the start of the season, the 18-year-old Argentine played frequently, but he has recently found himself on the bench more often.
Under Alonso, discipline came to Real, a shift that the star players were not prepared for. Whether the coach can manage to navigate this situation remains unclear for now: if communication with the dressing room is not established soon, it may be challenging for Alonso to stay on until the end of the season.
A recent example can be seen in Valeriy Karpin, who faced a similar situation at Dynamo after Marcel Lichka's tenure. However, while Karpin decided to leave on his own, Alonso is still at the helm for now.
The best solution In the current circumstances, the best decision is not to force events unnecessarily. At this point, retaining Alonso seems to be the ideal approach, as mid-season managerial changes do not always benefit big clubs.
Moreover, under time pressure, a wrong decision could be made by appointing an unsuitable coach, further complicating the situation. Real's management seemingly understands this, which is why, even after an eight-game winless streak (with only two victories in that span), Alonso has not been dismissed.
Historically, Real avoids making drastic moves to maintain equilibrium. If the team manages to avoid further decline or setbacks in the Champions League, Alonso should be allowed to complete his project.
Otherwise, the Spanish manager's departure will inevitably follow. Dmitry Milyayev
