Pep’s bitter verdict: City couldn’t score as chances went begging

In Matchweek 19 of the Premier League, Manchester City drew 0–0 away to Sunderland. After the game, head coach Pep Guardiola spoke candidly — the main issue was clear: City had chances, but got no reward from them.

Guardiola noted that his side created a lot of clear-cut chances during the match but failed to convert them.

“We missed so many chances. We couldn’t take the situations where we could have scored. In the first half we struggled to play the football we want. Overall, it was a good game,” Guardiola said.

The coach added that City looked much livelier in the second half. After the break, the team pushed until the end for a win, but the scoreline still didn’t change.

“After the break everything was good, the lads fought until the end to win. We can be a bit disappointed with the result. But in three days we have a very tough game against Chelsea. We must stay calm,” Guardiola said.

Guardiola reiterated the most painful point: after half-time City could have taken the win, but key moments were wasted.

“I’ll say it again: after the break we could have won, but we squandered the chances. Savinho had two, and Doku, Gvardiol, Foden and Haaland also had good opportunities to score,” Guardiola said.

In short, City’s performance wasn’t bad, but there was no end product. And time won’t wait — a tough test against Chelsea comes in three days. As Pep said, calmness and precision will be the key.
