Germany may boycott the World Cup

Germany’s national football team is signaling caution over possible participation in the next World Cup as military tensions in the Middle East intensify. Concerns linked to the wider geopolitical climate and Washington’s foreign policy have fueled renewed discussion in Germany about whether the team should boycott the tournament.
Former World Cup-winning coach Joachim Low said political concerns around major tournaments are not new, but he warned that the current situation is especially serious. He recalled debates before the 2018 World Cup in Russia and boycott calls ahead of the 2022 tournament in Qatar. According to Low, playing in a country directly affected by active war would create far greater risks and could leave the competition heavily shaped by politics.
Low said the national team and the German football federation must treat security as a top priority in international sport. Fans and players are already following developments closely, and any final decision will depend on how the political and security situation evolves in the coming period.
