István Kovács excluded from the UCL: Barcelona’s complaint brought results

The Romanian referee István Kovács will no longer work in UEFA Champions League matches in the current season. The reason for UEFA’s decision was his performance in a controversial match.
It is reported that Kovács officiated the Champions League quarter-final match between “Barcelona” and “Atlético” (0:2). It was precisely in this match, in the second half, that a penalty was not awarded in an incident in the direction of the “Atlético” goal. The referee’s failure to react to this episode caused widespread discussions.
After that, the club “Barcelona”, expressing dissatisfaction with the refereeing decisions, submitted an official complaint to UEFA. The Catalans pointed to this incident as one of the decisive refereeing errors where a penalty should have been awarded.
According to the “Diario Sport” publication, UEFA reviewed the complaint and as a result decided to exclude István Kovács from Champions League matches this season. Thus, he will no longer officiate in the UCL this season.
This decision has caused wide discussion in the football community. Some consider it a fair step, while others note that pressure on referees is increasing.
