Real Madrid considers surprise candidate for managerial position

While Jose Mourinho is seen as the primary candidate for the Real Madrid head coach position, the club's management is also preparing backup options. According to Radio Marca journalist Raul Varela, if an agreement with the Portuguese specialist fails, the Madrid club is considering former Bundesliga coach Pellegrino Matarazzo as a top candidate. This is reported by Goal.com reports .

Florentino Pérez is analyzing a list of candidates who could replace Álvaro Arbeloa. Matarazzo's modern football philosophy and tactical approach are highly valued at the Bernabéu, though the 48-year-old American's move to the Spanish capital is currently considered unlikely.

At the moment, there is high confidence in Madrid regarding the appointment of Jose Mourinho. Transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri claims the deal is already finalized and the club could issue an official statement within the coming week. Mourinho's contract with Benfica, running until 2027, includes a 3 million euro release clause.

Pellegrino Matarazzo took charge of Real Sociedad in December 2025. In a short time, he fundamentally transformed the team's play, returning them to the top of the LaLiga table and succeeding in winning the Copa del Rey. Consequently, the team has secured a spot in the Europa League for next season.
