This small distinction implies major changes. The "manager" status grants Alonso more authority in squad building and transfer policy compared to previous coaches Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior. The BlueCo consortium finally seems determined to build the team on a long-term project, which means the coach will be given time to instill his philosophy.
Chelsea showed impatience in working with Maresca and Rosenior in the recent past. In particular, the dismissal of Maresca despite securing a Champions League spot is evidence of the chaos at the club.
