Fermin Lopez undergoes surgery: Life and football can be cruel

Barcelona and Spain midfielder Fermin Lopez has undergone successful surgery on his right foot. The player fractured his fifth metatarsal during the La Liga match against Real Betis (3:1). The club's press office confirmed that the surgery took place at a Barcelona hospital under the supervision of Dr. Antoni Dalmau Coll. This is reported by Goal.com .
This injury is a sudden blow for the 23-year-old, who was a top contender for a starting spot in the Spain national team preparing for the 2026 World Cup. After the surgery, Fermin addressed his fans via social media to share his emotions.
"The surgery went very well, and I am already thinking about returning stronger both physically and mentally. Life and football can be cruel when you least expect or deserve it, but you have to accept it as part of the journey. This is a very difficult time for me, but I will definitely overcome this challenge," wrote Fermin Lopez.
The La Masia graduate, who recorded 13 goals and 17 assists in 48 games this season, will now be sidelined for at least three months. This means he will miss not only the prestigious tournament in North America but also all of Barcelona's pre-season training camps.
For Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente, this is a significant loss. The team is facing several fitness issues with key players ahead of the tournament. Now, Fermin is forced to support his teammates from home.
