De la Fuente explains Spain squad selection without Real Madrid players

Spain national team head coach Luis de la Fuente has responded to questions regarding the absence of Real Madrid players in the squad announced for the 2026 World Cup. The final 26-man roster for the tournament, hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, was revealed on Monday, May 25.
The most discussed aspect was the complete absence of any Real Madrid players from the list. In Spanish football, the 'Royal Club' has always been considered a key pillar for the national team. Consequently, this decision sparked various opinions among fans and experts.
Luis de la Fuente emphasized that he focuses on the interests of the national team rather than the clubs. He stated that for a national team coach, it is not about which club a player represents, but how they defend the honor of Spain.
“I am the national team coach, and I am not concerned about where these players come from. These are national team players; I do not look at one club or another. I do not have the bias a fan might have. I only want these players to be proud to represent the national team,” said de la Fuente.
The coach's words imply that his selection was based solely on sporting principles. For de la Fuente, current form, tactical fit, team balance, and the player's role within the national team system appear to be the primary criteria.
The Spain national team has been drawn into Group H for the World Cup. The 'La Roja' will face Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay in the group stage. The team will play against Cape Verde on June 15, Saudi Arabia on June 21, and Uruguay on June 27.
Before the World Cup begins, Spain also has two friendly matches ahead. De la Fuente's squad will play against Iraq on June 4 and Peru on June 9. These matches are crucial for the coaching staff to test the squad, verify tactical plans, and assess the condition of key players.
Spain is considered one of the favorites for the World Cup. The team possesses young talents, experienced players, and a strong midfield. However, the debate surrounding the squad formed without Real Madrid representatives is certain to continue for some time.
In short, Luis de la Fuente stated that he looked at the needs of the national team, not the club names, regarding the exclusion of Real Madrid players. His position is simple: the national team is not a parade of clubs, but a single team defending the honor of Spain. Now, the pitch will show how correct this selection was.
