Fabio Cannavaro Makes a Tough Decision: The National Team Will Be Rejuvenated

The player selection process in the Uzbekistan national team will undergo major changes. Head coach Fabio Cannavaro has announced that a player's current form, rather than past achievements or reputation, will now be the decisive criterion.

The Italian coach admitted that, when selecting the squad for the World Cup, he gave some experienced players opportunities based on their past contributions. Now, the plan is to rejuvenate the national team, try new names and even open the door to talents as young as 17.

“It was a valuable lesson for me”

At a press conference, Cannavaro did not hide the fact that his World Cup experience had changed his approach to selecting players.

“From now on, I will not select players for the squad because of their previous achievements. It was a valuable lesson for me.”

According to the coach, when forming the World Cup squad, the contributions of many players who had played a major role in the qualifying campaign were taken into account.

To a certain extent, this decision was based on the principle of team justice. The players who had helped secure the historic qualification were considered deserving of the opportunity to play at the World Cup.

However, the results of the major tournament showed Cannavaro that past achievements and current sporting form are not always the same.

“I decided to take many players because of their contributions in the World Cup qualifiers. Now we will begin rejuvenating the national team.”

In this way, the coach openly criticized some of the decisions he made for the World Cup and announced that he would take a different approach in future tournaments.

No One Will Have a Permanent Place in the National Team

Cannavaro's new approach does not mean that experienced players in the national team will automatically be left out. However, their previous performances will no longer be enough to guarantee another call-up.

A player's:

— suitability for the coach's tactical requirements;
— attitude in training are expected to become the main criteria.

Even before the World Cup, Cannavaro said that he would assess players based on what they showed on the pitch rather than their age. At an official press conference organized by the Uzbekistan Football Association, he stressed that he had called up players who seemed worthy and were able to convince him.

His latest statement shows that this principle will now be applied even more strictly.

The Closed Circle Will Be Expanded

Cannavaro also offered a critical assessment of the selection system that had taken shape in the national team over many years.

“In the past, 22 or 23 players were selected for the national team and camps were held with that squad. Other players had almost no chance of playing for the national team.”

Such an approach can strengthen understanding among the players in the starting lineup. However, if the selection pool remains unchanged for too long, the door to the national team may close for new players performing well in the domestic league.

Reduced competition can create the impression that the places of key players are guaranteed. Cannavaro is trying to change precisely this environment.

Before the World Cup, he considered an extended group of 40 players before reducing it to 30. FIFA data also noted that the squad included not only experienced leaders but also teenage players.

Now, such a broad selection process could become a permanent working method rather than a one-off experiment.

“Even if he is 17 years old”

Cannavaro's most important promise concerned giving young players opportunities.

“My view is different. I will give everyone an opportunity, even if he is 17 years old.”

This statement means that age on a passport will not be a barrier to a national-team call-up. If a young player can convince the coaching staff in the Super League or youth competitions, he may be tested at a senior national-team camp.

However, rejuvenation is not simply about replacing experienced players with younger ones. The key is to find players who are ready for competition, capable of playing at a high tempo and able to withstand pressure at international level.

Alongside giving a young player an opportunity, a certain degree of patience with his mistakes is also required. Otherwise, dropping a player permanently after one unsuccessful match will not lead to genuine renewal.

A New Team Will Be Built for the Asian Cup

The process of rejuvenating the national team is beginning at the same time as Cannavaro's tactical changes. The coach had previously announced his intention to switch Uzbekistan to a back four and a 4-3-3 formation.

This will require not only younger players but also performers capable of meeting the demands of the new system. Speed on the wings, high intensity in midfield and immediate pressing after losing the ball will be required.

As a result, more new names may appear in the squad at upcoming camps, while some long-serving players may be left without call-ups.

Cannavaro faces a difficult task: he must manage the generational transition while also achieving a strong result at the Asian Cup.
