Simeone Finds a New Warrior: World Champion Cristian Romero Joins Atlético

Spanish La Liga side from Madrid, Atlético have completed one of the biggest deals of the summer transfer window. The “Colchoneros” announced on their official website that London Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero has joined the squad.

The new contract signed with the 28-year-old Argentine defender runs until 30 June 2031 — a five-year deal.

Details of the €40 million deal

According to renowned insider Fabrizio Romano the agreement between the clubs includes the following financial terms:

• Transfer fee: Atlético will pay the Spurs €40 million for the Argentina international defender;

• Sell-on percentage: Under the agreement, Tottenham have retained the right to receive 15 percent of any potential future resale of the player;

• Market value: The reputable Transfermarkt currently values the player’s transfer fee at €50 millionindicating that the Madrid club completed the transfer on very favorable terms.

Romero’s productive spell at Tottenham

Cristian Romero had represented the London club since the summer of 2022, becoming one of the Premier League’s strongest and most uncompromising centre-backs.

During his time in England, he:

• made 156 official appearances;

• scored 13 goals;

• provided 7 assists.

By adding a true leader and warrior to the heart of Diego Simeone’s Atlético defence, the club has shown its firm determination to challenge for the La Liga and Champions League titles next season.
