Google AI helps create self-healing asphalt
A team of scientists from the UK and Chile has developed a new type of road surface capable of self-repairing cracks. The material was designed based on natural regeneration mechanisms found in trees and some animals.

Self-Healing Asphalt

Researchers used AI and machine learning to analyze organic compounds in complex liquids, including bitumen. This allowed them to create a new model that accelerates atomic-level simulations. Additionally, Google Cloud technology helped analyze chemical properties and generate virtual molecules.

A similar approach is already used in pharmaceuticals to develop new drugs. Laboratory tests showed that the new asphalt could repair small cracks in just one hour. This effect is achieved using natural microcapsules containing spores and restorative components derived from recycled materials.

In the future, this technology could reduce road maintenance costs. By decreasing the need for repairs, self-healing asphalt is seen as a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable solution for road damage management.
