OpenAI founder Sam Altman and his startup Tools for Humanity are putting new technology into practice — this time in the cryptocurrency space. They have launched a cryptocurrency called World (WLD) in the US.

The most interesting thing is that this cryptocurrency can be obtained not for money, but by scanning your eyeball. That is, if you scan your eye with a special Orb device, a unique hash code will be generated to confirm that you are a human. This code is stored in your World ID profile and proves that you are a real person, not an artificial intelligence.

The original name of this initiative was Worldcoin. According to the project's initiators, their goal is very simple and at the same time the right answer to a modern problem: at a time when it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between a person and an algorithm in the Internet world, a reliable authentication system is needed.

The authors of the World project believe in the future of this system. They see it not only as a means of identifying a person, but also as a means of mobile payments, identification, security, and use on various online platforms. In the near future, it is expected that the possibility of converting WLD cryptocurrency into traditional money via a Visa debit card will be created.

Today, Telegram, Discord, Shopify, and other large online platforms also provide the ability to authenticate via World ID. This is especially important in cases where it is necessary to distinguish a person from artificial intelligence.

Two types of equipment are used to scan the iris:

• Orb — a special device with a multi-camera, metal case;
  
• Orb Mini — a gadget similar to a smartphone, designed to be used in the hand.
  

Both create a unique identifier called IrisCode and store it in a global database. This code helps you identify yourself as a unique person in cyberspace.

It is worth noting that this idea has caused controversy. However, more than 26 million people have already registered for the project, of which 12 million have confirmed their identity.

The World project is mainly aimed at developing countries. The technology has also been tested in these markets, and there is reportedly a high level of interest from teams there.
