Japan develops plastic that dissolves in seawater: major step for the planet

A new type of plastic developed by Japanese scientists could not only simplify human life but also play a significant role in protecting the environment. Research conducted by experts from the University of Tokyo and the RIKEN Center for Advanced Materials has attracted global attention.

Dissolves in water without leaving a trace
Researchers demonstrated that a small piece of the new material dissolves completely in seawater within just one hour. More importantly, it leaves behind no harmful particles or microplastics. This is a significant breakthrough for both marine life and human health.

The new type of plastic is as durable and practical as conventional petroleum-based plastic. When exposed to salt, it breaks down into basic components, which are then decomposed by bacteria. As a result, no microplastics are formed. Scientists estimate that in soil (which also contains salt), the material decomposes within approximately 200 hours.

Importantly, the material is non-toxic, does not burn, and does not emit carbon dioxide. It is entirely safe from an environmental standpoint and does not harm the ecosystem even during recycling.

Growing commercial interest
Although mass production has not yet begun, the project’s developers report that packaging companies and major global brands are already showing strong interest.

A large-scale problem
According to the United Nations, by 2040, global plastic waste may triple — reaching up to 23–37 million tons annually. In such a scenario, this Japanese innovation could be crucial not only from a scientific standpoint but also for international environmental policy.
