According to insider information, Apple may abandon Face ID on its first foldable smartphone - the iPhone Fold. The company plans to replace it with Touch ID, which was previously widely used but later faded into obscurity. The fingerprint authentication system is installed on the Power button located on the side of the device.
It is known that Touch ID was last used in the iPhone SE model, which was presented in 2022. Apple's main flagship smartphones have not used this technology at all since 2017. Now this classic, once very popular feature could return to the stage on the company's most expensive and most talked-about iPhone.
The main reason for this decision is related to the design and interior of the device. The Face ID system, as well as the scanners installed under the screen, require a lot of space inside the smartphone. And the foldable iPhone should not be inferior to Apple's competitors, both in appearance and technically - especially in terms of thickness.
In addition, the foldable format creates another difficulty for Face ID. To unlock the device, both open and closed, you need to insert two different Face ID systems. This creates additional problems both from an engineering point of view and in terms of price and location.
Against this backdrop, installing Touch ID on the side is seen as the most rational solution for Apple. This method is technically simpler, takes up less space, and most importantly - reliable.
The re-introduction of Touch ID could be ideal for some Apple fans. Many users believe that fingerprint unlocking is faster, more convenient, and in some cases more reliable than Face ID. This method seems even more advantageous, especially in masks or in low light conditions.
In short, although Apple is moving forward in technology, in some cases it is not afraid to return to proven and reliable solutions. iPhone Fold is sure to generate great market interest not only through its design but also through such unexpected decisions.
