Hackers steal $3 million in Sri Lanka

The government of Sri Lanka has lost more than $3 million as a result of two recent cyberattacks. The country continues to recover from the 2022 debt crisis. Techcrunch.com reports this.
A payment of $625,000 sent to the U.S. Postal Service has been missing for several weeks. Authorities discovered this after hackers attempted to divert another payment intended for India.
Earlier, it was reported that $2.5 million had been stolen from the Sri Lankan Ministry of Finance. The Treasury Secretary noted that hackers redirected payments to other bank accounts instead of the intended recipients.
These incidents were carried out through business email compromise. Criminals infiltrate mailboxes or accounting systems to change account numbers.
It is currently unclear whether the two thefts are interconnected. The government is conducting investigations into these cybercrimes.
