Google Chrome downloads 4GB AI model without user permission

Google Chrome version 147 has caused an unexpected issue for users. The browser is downloading a 4GB file named "weights.bin" to computer storage without any warning. This file is part of the Gemini Nano AI model, designed for features like text assistance, auto-fill, and fraud detection. According to Ixbt.com reports .

This model runs directly on the user's device without using cloud services. While positive for privacy, it poses a serious problem for computers with limited storage. The file is stored in the "OptGuideOnDeviceModel" folder in the user profile, and simply deleting it is not enough, as it may be re-downloaded unless browser settings are changed.

Google has not provided clear information on how much storage these features require. Users must disable the "On-Device AI" option in browser settings to completely remove this model. The company notes that the model size may change with future browser updates.

Experts are calling on Google to notify users in advance about such large files and provide them with a choice. If users were given the option to choose between cloud-based models or installing a local model, such misunderstandings could have been avoided.
