Is xAI becoming a neocloud company?

On Wednesday, xAI and Anthropic announced an unexpected partnership. According to the deal, the creator of Claude has leased all computing power from xAI's Colossus 1 data center, totaling approximately 300 MW. This agreement could generate billions of dollars in revenue for xAI and has transformed the company from a mere consumer into a provider of computing power, reports Techcrunch.com. reports .

According to Elon Musk, xAI has moved the training of its AI models to the newer Colossus 2 center, leaving the first facility vacant. Against the backdrop of declining usage metrics for the Grok project, this contract with Anthropic is a significant step toward improving the company's financial position and accelerating the process of going public, potentially in conjunction with SpaceX.

However, this partnership raises interesting questions about Elon Musk's priorities. Tech giants like Google and Meta prefer to keep their computing power for their own AI product development rather than leasing it to others. Sundar Pichai and Mark Zuckerberg view compute capacity as a strategic future advantage.

xAI, meanwhile, is following a path similar to the neocloud business model by purchasing NVIDIA GPUs and leasing them to model developers like Anthropic. This is a highly complex sector involving risks related to chip suppliers and market volatility. Musk's plan is even more ambitious: he aims to build data centers in space in the future and produce his own chips via Terafab.
