Tesla Model Y becomes the first vehicle to meet new safety standards

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that the 2026 Tesla Model Y is the first vehicle to meet the agency's new safety criteria for advanced driver assistance systems. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reporting .

The new assessment program adds four critical tests: automatic emergency braking for pedestrians, blind spot warning, blind spot intervention, and lane keeping support. These updated criteria were introduced to objectively evaluate the technological capabilities of modern vehicles.

This certification applies to Tesla Model Y vehicles manufactured on or after November 12, 2025. The NHTSA is conducting these tests as part of its renowned 5-Star safety rating program.

The agency also tests vehicle crashworthiness and other safety metrics. So far, no information has been provided on which other car models are passing this new standard.
