US expert to pay $10 million for selling cyberweapons to Russia

Peter Williams, a former executive at US defense contractor L3Harris, has been ordered to pay $10 million in restitution to his former employer. Williams led the company's Trenchant division, which develops cyber-espionage and hacking tools, and was responsible for one of the largest data leaks in its history. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports .
According to investigators, the 39-year-old Australian expert stole seven types of classified technologies and sold them to the Russian brokerage firm Operation Zero. This firm is known for purchasing hacking tools for the Russian government and local companies. Williams earned $1.3 million from this illegal trade and spent the funds on luxury goods and real estate.
Prosecutors stated that Williams betrayed the US and its allies. The tools he stole allowed for the hacking of millions of devices worldwide. Research conducted by Google revealed that some of these codes were used in cyberattacks in Ukraine and by Chinese cybercriminals.
Williams pleaded guilty and was sentenced to over seven years in prison. L3Harris estimated the damage at $35 million. According to the court ruling, in addition to the previous $1.3 million fine, he must pay an additional $10 million in restitution.
