Cyberattacks targeted Polish water treatment plants

The Polish intelligence service announced that cyberattacks have been detected on five water treatment plants in the country. Hackers attempted to gain control over industrial equipment at these facilities, which, in a worst-case scenario, could have posed a serious threat to water supply security. This was reported by Techcrunch.com reporting that.

According to a report by the Polish Internal Security Agency, Russian special services and hackers are carrying out sabotage operations against critical infrastructure, such as military facilities, energy grids, and transport systems. These attacks aim not only to disrupt infrastructure but also to endanger human lives.

Similar threats are being observed in the US. Specifically, according to CISA and FBI data, hacker groups linked to Iran are actively attacking programmable logic controllers (PLC) used in water and energy facilities in the US. In 2021, hackers attempted to raise chemical levels to dangerous concentrations at a water treatment plant in Florida.

Experts believe these cyberattacks against Poland and the US are part of a unified strategy aimed at destabilizing Western nations. Cyberespionage and sabotage have become key weapons used by the Russian regime to weaken the West.
