NASA modifies Artemis III mission: Moon landing delayed

NASA has modified the concept of the Artemis III mission. The flight will now take place in low Earth orbit rather than on the Moon. This step is considered an important preparatory phase for executing future lunar landing operations perfectly. This is reported by Ixbt.com .

The main goal of the mission is to test the interaction of the Orion spacecraft with lunar modules. In this process, NASA will work in coordination with SpaceX and Blue Origin simultaneously for the first time. During the flight, a mockup replicating the mass and dimensions of the SLS rocket's upper stage will be used instead of the actual stage.

In orbit, the crew will perform rendezvous and docking maneuvers with simulators of Blue Origin's Blue Moon Mark 2 and SpaceX's Starship HLS modules. Astronauts are also expected to test interfaces designed for Axiom's AxEMU spacesuits.

This mission aims to reduce risks ahead of the actual lunar landing planned for Artemis IV. NASA has not yet reached a final decision regarding the mission crew and specific dates.
