Intuitive Machines acquires Goonhilly station for lunar communications

Intuitive Machines, an American company known for its successful lunar delivery projects, has reached an agreement to acquire the legendary British Goonhilly Earth Station and its US subsidiary, Comsat. The deal is valued at approximately $50 million, payable in cash and stock. The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter of this year, pending regulatory approval. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports .

As part of the deal, Intuitive Machines will gain control of large 30- and 32-meter antennas in Cornwall, as well as dozens of smaller directional antennas in Connecticut and California. The Goonhilly station played a crucial role in data transmission during the company's IM-1 and IM-2 missions. Now, this infrastructure will become the foundation of the company's global ground communication network.

Intuitive Machines CEO Steve Altemus noted that this integration will allow for the creation of a unified ecosystem for space communication, navigation, and positioning. Ground-based radio telescopes will work in tandem with the company's own satellite network. This will enable customers to receive seamless and stable communication services from Earth orbit to lunar space.

Furthermore, the presence in the UK opens up opportunities for the company to collaborate directly with the European Space Agency (ESA) and sign new contracts. NASA is currently planning to increase the number of commercial missions under its Artemis program, which creates a foundation for Intuitive Machines to participate in new tenders and further expand its production capacity.
