New method found to extend the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries

US scientists have discovered a simple way to significantly extend the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries. Researchers at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University have proven that high results can be achieved by changing the cathode heating procedure during the manufacturing process without altering the battery chemistry. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports .
Nickel-rich cathodes used in electric vehicles and high energy density devices develop micro-cracks over time, leading to a decrease in battery capacity. Scientists managed to homogenize the internal structure of the material by heating the cathode slowly and then faster during the manufacturing process.
Batteries produced using this method retained up to 93 percent of their initial capacity after 500 charge cycles. This figure is considered one of the highest results among modern technologies.
X-ray analysis showed that the step-by-step heating process prevents the formation of pores within the particles and ensures uniform distribution of lithium compounds. The biggest advantage of this technology is that it can be quickly implemented in existing factories without fundamentally changing production lines.
The new method holds great promise not only for smartphones and laptops but also for electric vehicles, data centers, and large energy storage systems. This innovation allows for increased durability without raising battery costs.
