Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to sign memorandum on saiga conservation

The Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan are systematically developing interstate cooperation aimed at conserving rare, endangered saiga antelopes.

Within the framework of bilateral dialogue between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, it is planned to sign a memorandum of understanding on saiga conservation. This document will serve as the basis for comprehensive programs to restore saiga populations.

The memorandum envisages the following joint measures:

— creating protected areas and migratory corridors along the border that ensure free movement and safety of saigas along their traditional migration routes;
— restoring natural pastures, water bodies and ecosystems important for their feeding and reproduction;
— developing a saiga reintroduction program into the wild;
— organizing scientific research, monitoring and experience exchange, including joint expeditions, patrols, specialist training and population data exchange.

The cooperation covers the main directions of saiga conservation, including monitoring population size, health and migration in transboundary ecosystems, habitat restoration and prevention of habitat fragmentation, development of plans, exchange of scientific, technical and genetic information, implementation of satellite monitoring and veterinary control, strengthening anti-poaching nature protection measures, conducting public awareness campaigns, harmonizing accounting methods and creating a unified database, as well as attracting international partners for implementation of conservation programs.
