President Shavkat Mirziyoyev today, October 15, visited the Yakkasaray district of Tashkent and reviewed large-scale reconstruction works carried out on Shota Rustaveli Street, the Presidential Press Service reported.
The Head of State personally inspected the renewed infrastructure by taking a bus ride together with representatives of state and public organizations. He evaluated the improvements, spoke with passengers, and listened to their opinions.
In recent years, Tashkent has been rapidly developing, with its population growing significantly. This requires modernization of the city’s transport system in line with contemporary demands. As the President emphasized: “Smooth roads and comfortable public transport are the main indicators of citizens’ satisfaction and quality of life.”
Shota Rustaveli Street is one of the city’s main arteries connecting several districts. To ease traffic, nearly seven kilometers — from Mirobod Street to Choshtepa Street — were completely reconstructed.
The street has now taken on a modern appearance: it consists of 10 lanes — six for cars, two dedicated lanes for buses, and two for parking.
One of the most important innovations is the introduction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Tashkent for the first time. This system is widely used in developed countries to make public transport faster and safer.
As a result, passenger flow increased from 2,500 to 6,000 people per hour. Road capacity also nearly doubled, allowing up to 40,000 vehicles per day.
The project’s total cost amounts to $19.2 million. Road safety has been enhanced: 463 “smart” traffic lights and 21 new bus stops have been installed. Traffic management is now automated through an intelligent transport system.
In addition, bicycle lanes, green zones, irrigation, and drainage systems have been built along the street. This not only improves transportation convenience but also contributes to a healthier environment.
During his visit, the President reviewed projects aimed at expanding bus routes, building transport hubs around the city, and strengthening the connection with New Tashkent.
“If we hadn’t built the metro and brought new buses, traffic in Tashkent would have become a serious problem today. That’s why we continue to create comfort for our people,” said the President.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev instructed officials to further develop public transport, reduce congestion, and bring the capital’s infrastructure to a new level.
