Meta Corporation has agreed to pay $25 million to settle a lawsuit with US President Donald Trump.

The lawsuit arose after Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts were blocked after the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

According to The Wall Street Journal, under the terms of the agreement, $22 million will be directed to the presidential library fund, and the rest will be used to cover legal costs. The publication notes that the corporation does not publicly admit its guilt.

According to American media, the company's head Mark Zuckerberg has recently been trying to improve relations with Trump in order to protect his corporation from possible pressure from the new administration. Meta has previously been criticized by Washington conservatives for bias in favor of Democrats.

During a conversation with investors on January 29 of this year, the Meta founder thanked the Trump administration for supporting American technology companies and "defending values." The billionaire added that "this year will be an important year for us to reconsider our relations with governments."

In December 2024, Meta also sent $ 1 million to Trump's inaugural fund. The WSJ called this donation "a departure from the past practices of Zuckerberg and his company."

In November 2024, Zuckerberg visited Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and tried to establish relations with the future president. According to some reports, during dinner, Trump raised the issue of the lawsuit and offered to try to resolve it. This offer was the impetus for the start of two-month negotiations between the parties.

Trump's accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (X), and YouTube were blocked in early 2021, and in July of that year he sued the management of social networks. The charges against Twitter were dismissed, and the lawsuit against Google, which owns YouTube, was closed in 2023.

The politician's Twitter account was restored in 2022, and his accounts on other social networks in 2023. In February 2022, due to the blocking, Trump launched his own social network Truth Social.

Attack on the Capitol in January 2021

Supporters of Donald Trump, who lost the presidential election, rioted in front of the Capitol building on January 6, 2021, during the confirmation of the results of the vote. Protesters stormed the building, Congressional discussions were suspended for several hours, and lawmakers were evacuated. Police used tear gas against the participants in the attack, and the US National Guard arrived in Washington.

Five people died during the protests, about 50 people were arrested, some of whom were charged. Hundreds of participants in the attack were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment. According to investigators, the main participants in the demonstration were the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers organizations.

A total of more than 1,230 people are involved in the storming of the Capitol, including Donald Trump.
