Democratic prosecutors and officials from 14 US states have sued President Donald Trump and the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk. This was reported by ABC News.

The lawsuit claims that Musk's appointment violates the US Constitution because he is performing duties that require confirmation by the Senate.

The lawsuit argues that there is no greater threat to democracy than the concentration of state power in the hands of a single person who is not elected by anyone.

The states are asking Musk to divert state funds, cancel contracts with federal employees and prohibit others.

The lawsuit was filed by New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torres and officials from Arizona, Michigan, Maryland, Minnesota, California, Nevada, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii.

The states, led by New Mexico, claim that Musk has “unprecedented” powers that allow him to close federal agencies and cut budgets without legislative approval. 26 employees and contractors of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) also filed a lawsuit seeking to limit DOGE’s powers.

Several agencies have already restricted DOGE’s access to classified information, and the court has temporarily blocked the agency from laying off more than 2,000 USAID employees. The plaintiffs are seeking to declare all of Musk’s decisions illegal and suspend his work at DOGE until he is confirmed by the Senate.

The Trump administration insists that Musk is acting within the law, while DOGE is engaged in reducing government spending and fighting corruption.
