According to the Adaderana portal, the incident occurred on February 19 in the Gal Oya area. The Minagaya train, which was traveling from Batticaloa to Colombo, hit the elephants crossing the railway line. As a result, six elephants died.

In addition, the incident led to changes in the railway transport schedule. The Pulatisi train from Batticaloa to Colombo was canceled. The Railway Department has organized another train for Minagaya passengers.

It is noted that such problems are observed on the railway lines passing through the reserve areas. Local authorities and environmentalists are calling for increased security measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

The elephant incident is under investigation, and experts are considering installing additional barriers and warning systems around the railway.
