Sanjeev Kumar Samararatne, the leader of a criminal group known as Ganemulla Sanjeev, was shot dead in a courtroom in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo. The BBC reported this.
The killer, posing as a lawyer, entered the courthouse. He used a pistol as his weapon. The weapon was taken from the investigation by a 25-year-old woman - she hid it in a book with pages cut out.
The attacker tried to escape, but was caught. His accomplice, a girl, is still being sought. Police have announced a reward for information about him.

Sanjiva was arrested on suspicion of several murders and has been in custody since September 2023. Last week, he was brought to court, then attacked and taken to hospital, where he died.
After the incident, parliament discussed the issue of strengthening security measures in courts. The issue of organizing armed guards for particularly dangerous suspects was raised.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of promises by authorities to step up the fight against organized crime. At least nine murders were recorded in Sri Lanka in 2024.
