US President Donald Trump has commented on the preliminary results of the German Bundestag elections. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU) bloc won 28.5 percent of the vote. The White House chief of staff made his comments on Sunday, February 23, on the Truth Social social network.
“It looks like the conservative party in Germany has won a very important and long-awaited election,” the American leader wrote. “Like the United States, the German people are tired of the meaningless agenda that has been in place for many years, especially on energy and migration issues,” Trump added.
He called February 23 a “great day” for Germany and the United States under his leadership. “Congratulations to everyone — there are many more victories ahead,” the American leader concluded.
Austrian ruling party congratulates Merz
Meanwhile, Christian Stocker, secretary general of the ruling Austrian People’s Party (AFP), also congratulated Friedrich Merz, the CDU/CSU’s candidate for chancellor.
“Like Austria, Germany is facing many challenges, and it is important to act decisively and strengthen the position of business. Friedrich Merz’s election victory is also a victory for the democratic center,” the potential future Austrian chancellor said.
“I sincerely congratulate the CDU/CSU on this excellent result and look forward to cooperation within our party family,” he added.
