Trump: Ukraine Must Forget About NATO

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Washington will not provide additional security guarantees to Ukraine. “I will not give more security guarantees than we already have. We will leave that to Europe… But we will, of course, make sure that everything turns out well,” Trump said during a government meeting on February 26. According to him, if European peacekeeping forces are deployed in Ukraine, Washington may support the initiative.

Trump expressed confidence that he could stop the war in Ukraine. In his opinion, Russia will be forced to make concessions in peace negotiations. “We will do everything we can to reach an agreement that benefits both sides,” Trump told journalists. He also emphasized that he would ensure the deal is beneficial for Ukraine. According to him, the U.S. may help Ukraine reclaim part of its lost territories, though he acknowledged that this is a difficult issue.

At the same time, Trump stressed that Ukraine should "forget about NATO." In his opinion, the war began precisely because of Ukraine's desire to join the North Atlantic Alliance.

US President Vladimir Zelensky has confirmed that he will visit Washington on February 28. According to him, Zelensky is coming to sign an agreement with the United States on "rare and other materials." Trump said that this agreement will help pay for military aid allocated to Ukraine by the Biden administration and will bring significant benefits to the United States.

Previously, Zelensky had stated that the agreement set to be signed in Washington does not involve Ukraine repaying military aid. He also mentioned that the document includes provisions for the U.S. government to support Ukraine’s efforts in obtaining long-term security guarantees necessary for lasting peace.
