Researchers at the University of East Anglia conducted a biometric analysis and found that the smell of freshly baked pizza reduces stress, anxiety and irritability. This was reported by Secret NYC.
The study was conducted by Professor Oli Buckley, and podcaster Theo Baker participated as a study participant. The professor measured his biometric indicators such as blood pressure, heart rate and galvanic skin response (GSR).
This was done both before a football match and during the most nerve-wracking moments of football. During this time, Baker inhaled the delicious aroma of pizza.
The results of the study showed that Theo showed less signs of nervousness before the game when he was near the pizza being cooked. The pizza even had a calming effect on him.
"Evaluating Theo's reactions in two situations - without pizza and with pizza - showed that cooking and eating a frozen pizza had a significantly calming effect," says Professor Buckley.
Later, OnePoll conducted a survey to find out how others reacted to the smell of pizza being cooked. The results were as follows:
- 42 percent said the smell made them feel comfortable;
- 28 percent said it lifted their mood;
- 17 percent said it made them feel excited.
According to the website Cookist, one of the main reasons for pizza's ability to lift your mood is serotonin, the "happiness hormone" that regulates mood, sleep, and appetite. Tryptophan, an essential amino acid, is found in many pizza toppings, such as cheese, meat, and tomato sauce. When tryptophan reaches the brain, it is converted into serotonin, which helps to increase feelings of calm and good mood.
