Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that there have been positive developments in the negotiations between the United States and Ukraine. He noted that representatives of the two countries have begun work on the upcoming meeting.
Zelensky said this in his video address on March 6. After that, the Chief of Staff of the Ukrainian President Andriy Yermak announced that he had a telephone conversation with US National Security Advisor Mike Walsh and that the results of the talks could be announced next week.
A step towards a just peace
Andriy Yermak wrote a separate post on his social media page about his telephone conversation with Mike Walsh. In it,
“We discussed the next steps towards a just and lasting peace. We also exchanged views on harmonizing positions in bilateral relations between the United States and Ukraine,” Yermak writes.
Zelensky also noted in his video message that a number of international actions were carried out ahead of the upcoming European Union summit in Brussels. The Ukrainian leader said that he had spoken with the leaders of the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia and Germany and expressed gratitude for their support.
US suspends intelligence sharing with Ukraine
The talks come after the United States decided not to provide Ukraine with critical intelligence on the movements of Russian troops.
US National Security Advisor Mike Valls said on March 6:
“We have taken a step back, taken a temporary break, and are reviewing all aspects of our relationship.”
The decision reflects the strain in relations between Washington and Kiev. The United States temporarily suspended military assistance to Ukraine on March 4. Zelensky, however, declared his readiness for negotiations and stressed the importance of preserving the partnership between Ukraine and America.
Talks between the United States and Ukraine appear to be reviving. Zelensky and Yermak said that a new meeting between the United States and Ukraine is planned, which could pave the way for peace talks.
However, Washington's suspension of intelligence sharing with Ukraine, as well as the temporary suspension of US military assistance, remain a serious test for Ukraine. How this will be resolved will be clear in the negotiations next week.
