According to American officials, Trump is the main negotiator
US President Donald Trump made it clear to Volodymyr Zelensky that Washington seeks a long-term peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. This was reported by White House press secretary Caroline Livett in an interview with Fox News.
According to her, the American leader made his position clear in a conversation with the Ukrainian president.
Livett noted: "Trump explained to Zelensky that the United States is serious about signing a long-term peace agreement. We are very pleased with the negotiations with the Ukrainian side today and hope that the agreements reached will be solid."
Livett also said that there is no information yet about how Moscow reacted to the issues discussed during the talks.
He said that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz are actively working on this issue.
“The president has been fully engaged in the process. He has received updates on the developments in Saudi Arabia throughout the day,” the official added.
The talks between US and Ukrainian representatives took place in Jeddah and lasted about seven hours. This was the first high-level meeting between representatives of the two countries since a heated dispute between Zelensky and Trump in late February.
The New York Times, citing a source in the Ukrainian delegation, reported that before these talks, representatives of France and Great Britain gave Kiev instructions on cooperation with the United States.
The meeting took place at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Jeddah. The Ukrainian side was attended by the head of the presidential administration Andriy Yermak, his deputy Pavel Palisa, Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.
Although Volodymyr Zelensky visited Saudi Arabia, he did not participate in the talks.
