The US government has deported 238 migrants from the Venezuelan criminal gang known as the "Tren de Aragua" to El Salvador. They have been placed in the notorious mega prison there. This was reported by Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele.
"The plane carrying the migrants was met at the airport in El Salvador by dozens of armed security guards. The mega prison is internationally renowned for its conditions. Inmates are forced to work while in prison. They live in overcrowded cells, and members of rival gangs fight to the death for food and water," the report says.
"The US pays very little for them, but for us it is a high price. Over time, the labor of more than 40,000 prisoners will make our prison system self-sufficient. Currently, this system costs $200 million a year," Bukele said.
The president noted that in addition to the gang members in Venezuela, 23 members of the MS-13 gang who were wanted in El Salvador were also deported.
"One of them is a member of the highest structure of the criminal organization. This will help us complete the collection of intelligence and expose the last remnants of MS-13, including its former and new members, funds, weapons, drugs, hideouts, collaborators and sponsors," the Salvadoran president said.
Bukele said El Salvador is committed to “moving forward in the fight against organized crime.” But this time, he will also help allies.
“We will make our prison system self-sufficient and we will receive important intelligence to make our country a safer place. May the creator, the United States, bless El Salvador,” Bukele said.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio thanked the Salvadoran president for his “help and friendship.”
The MS-13 organized crime group is one of the most ruthless, largest and fastest-growing street gangs in Central and North America.
