Apple has taken an unusual and urgent strategic step to avoid new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. According to reports, the company has shipped about 600 tons of iPhone smartphones manufactured in India to the US via cargo planes.
Why the urgent shipment?
According to Reuters, Apple has been transporting products since March using six cargo planes, each with a capacity of 100 tons. One of them even arrived in the US a few days before the new tariffs came into effect.
Such urgent actions are said to have been taken to avoid the company's 145% tariff payments. Because Apple's main production center is located in China, and tariffs on products from this country have been sharply increased.
Apple’s “green corridor” — now in India
Apple has requested the creation of a special “green corridor” at the Chennai airport in India. As a result, customs clearance time has been reduced from 30 hours to 6 hours. This method is very similar to some of Apple’s logistics models in China.
How many smartphones were transported?
According to Reuters, the average weight of a packaged iPhone 14 and charger is 350 grams. So, the 600-ton cargo corresponds to about 1.5 million iPhone smartphones.
The fight for the American market
Apple sells more than 220 million iPhones worldwide each year. According to Counterpoint Research, 20 percent of iPhones currently sold in the United States are manufactured in India, and the rest in China.
But the serious threat posed by tariffs is forcing the company to reconsider its logistics and production strategy. If the tariffs remain in place, iPhone prices could triple.
Apple is trying to not only avoid tariffs but also maintain its position in one of its most important markets, the United States, through its swift and intelligent actions. This demonstrates both its high level of logistics and its ability to adapt to global political situations. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
