The U.S. Department of Defense has removed Colonel Suzanne Meyers, commander of the Pituffik Air Base in Greenland, from her position. According to the Pentagon, the decision was made due to actions seen as opposing President Donald Trump’s political agenda.
“Any attempts to undermine the chain of command or sabotage President Trump’s policy direction will not be tolerated,” said Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell.
The controversy began with an email
While no official reason was given, the Pentagon referenced a Military.com article. It states that on March 31, Meyers sent an internal email criticizing Vice President J.D. Vance’s visit to the base three days earlier.
“I’m not well-versed in politics, but Mr. Vance’s remarks do not reflect the spirit of Pituffik. As long as I lead, all flags fly side by side,” she wrote — referring to U.S. claims over Greenland.
What did Vance say?
On March 28, Vice President J.D. Vance visited the base with an official U.S. delegation and stated that Greenland should be separated from Denmark and placed under U.S. control.
“The U.S. must ensure the security of the island against threats from China and Russia,” he said.
The Trump administration has previously expressed interest in taking control of Greenland.
Denmark responds: “Greenland is not for sale”
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen criticized the rhetoric from Washington. Greenland’s new Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen added:
“Greenland is not for sale. Trump’s approach is a threat to our political independence.”
Tensions between Copenhagen and Washington remain high, and the White House has not withdrawn its claims over the island.
What do you think — should Greenland belong to Denmark or the United States?
