In Moscow, a 14-year-old girl accidentally swallowed a 15 cm spoon

Doctors at the L.M. Roshal Children’s Clinical Center in Moscow, Russia, faced a highly unusual situation. They successfully removed a 15 cm long metal spoon from the stomach of a 14-year-old girl using an endoscopic method. This was reported by the press service of the Moscow Region Department of Health.

The incident occurred while the girl was eating. According to her, a piece of apple got stuck in her throat, and while trying to remove it using a spoon, she accidentally swallowed it. The unexpected event caused her serious concern, and she immediately sought medical help.

Doctors quickly performed an X-ray scan, followed by videoscopy, to determine the exact position of the foreign object. The results showed that the spoon was lodged horizontally in the stomach: the narrow end was stuck against the inner wall, and the wider part pointed toward the duodenum.

Surgery was considered, but the doctors chose not to perform open surgery due to its high risk. Instead, they opted for an endoscopic procedure. Using a special hook and forceps, the spoon was carefully pulled out through the throat.

The operation was carried out with high professionalism: no damage was done to the girl’s stomach or intestines. Doctors confirmed the success and discharged the patient shortly after.

Medical experts stress that such cases are rare, but require immediate and skilled attention. In any case of swallowing foreign objects, self-treatment must be avoided, and people should urgently seek medical care. Timely and correct actions are the key to preserving health.
