The German government has stated that in order to resolve the military conflict in Ukraine peacefully, the Russian side must first declare a guaranteed long-term ceasefire lasting at least 30 days. This was firmly emphasized by the head of the Federal Chancellor's Office, Christian Democratic Union (CDU) politician Thorsten Frei, in an interview with ARD television's Caren Miosga program.
“To resolve the situation, we must follow a clear sequence. The first step is a full and guaranteed ceasefire, and the second step is to begin diplomatic negotiations. This is the correct decision not only politically, but also from the perspective of common sense,” said Frei.
According to Thorsten Frei, the previously announced three-day ceasefire by Russian President Vladimir Putin was also not upheld. On the contrary, during that period, the number of rocket strikes and attacks increased.
“The Russian side violated even the short-term ceasefire it had declared. This situation reduced the international community’s trust in Russia’s sincerity and willingness to negotiate. Therefore, in order for negotiations to not only begin but also be effective, we need clear and firm signs from the Russian side,” Frei added.
According to the German government representative, if there is no guarantee of a long-term ceasefire from Moscow, the likelihood that any diplomatic actions will be effective is very low. For this reason, this demand is being firmly put forward by Germany and other European countries.
It should be reminded that earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that starting from May 12, he expects Russia to declare a full, long-term, and guaranteed ceasefire, which would create an important foundation for beginning diplomatic negotiations. Russian President Vladimir Putin, in turn, proposed holding direct negotiations in Istanbul on May 15 without any preliminary conditions.
At present, the international community is closely monitoring the development of the situation. If Russia enacts a long-term ceasefire, it could become a major step toward achieving peace in Ukraine.
