U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized that a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin is essential for significant progress in peace negotiations regarding Ukraine. This was reported by Reuters.

— Until we meet with Putin, nothing will change, — Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One before landing in Abu Dhabi. According to Sky News, he made this statement immediately after finishing his lunch of spaghetti and meatballs.

“If I don't go, why should he go?”

Previously, Trump also commented on Putin's absence at the Russia–Ukraine negotiations scheduled in Turkey. According to him, it's unlikely Putin would attend if Trump himself had no intention of going:

— If I'm not going, why should he go? Because I wasn't planning to go. I would go, but it wasn't in the plan, — said Trump.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed willingness on May 15 to initiate direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, on his part, specifically noted he expects Putin's personal participation in the meeting.
