On May 16, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made an important statement regarding the negotiations between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations held in Istanbul. He described the meeting as “a very small, but positive signal” and called for greater diplomatic engagement in the peace process.
“We must be more active in this matter, especially diplomatically,” said Merz. According to him, not only diplomacy but also military aid must not lose strength. “Ukraine must also be supported militarily,” the Chancellor emphasized.
Trust and disappointment in the negotiations
Speaking about the Istanbul talks, Merz expressed regret that Russia had not taken open steps to change its stance and end the armed conflict. “We all recognize that this week presented a good opportunity for Russia to engage in direct talks and cease fire. Unfortunately, Moscow did not use that opportunity,” he said.
Contact with Trump in Tirana
The German leader also noted that he is currently in the Albanian capital Tirana for the European Political Community summit and had a phone conversation there with former U.S. President Donald Trump. He was joined by Ukrainian President Zelensky as well as the leaders of France, the UK, and Poland.
“We are trying to keep Trump informed about the negotiation process regularly,” Merz stated. “We will use every possible means to keep the Americans aligned with us,” he added.

Although the talks in Istanbul ended without major agreements, they may indicate the beginning of renewed diplomatic engagement on the global stage. Merz’s comments once again confirm the firm stance of the European Union and Western countries in unified support of Ukraine.
