Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is using a softer, diplomatic approach in relations with U.S. President Donald Trump, attempting to win Washington over to his side, reports The Wall Street Journal in an analytical article. However, according to the publication, these efforts may not be sufficient.
Zelensky – open to Trump, ready for Putin
According to information, Zelensky supported the temporary ceasefire plan proposed by Trump. Moreover, an agreement regarding mineral resources was signed between Ukraine and the USA. Zelensky even traveled to Turkey intending to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin – but Putin declined the meeting.
Is Trump becoming soft toward Putin again?
Journalists emphasize that despite these efforts, after yesterday's phone call with Putin, Trump again showed an inclination to support the ceasefire scenario proposed by the Kremlin. The U.S. leader, despite previous harsh criticisms, was observed softening his stance toward Moscow again.
Dialogue first, not sanctions
WSJ writes that earlier Trump threatened Russia with new sanctions if Putin rejected the ceasefire. However, these measures were not taken in practice. Instead, Trump again stressed the necessity of dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow.
Zelensky – patience and hope
Despite previous disputes, Zelensky held another meeting with Trump, this time in the Vatican. The dialogue took place in a spirit of reconciliation, but the American president's positive attitude toward Putin remains.
In his latest statement, Trump mentioned that he is thinking about "red lines" regarding ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
Putin: “There are issues that need to be resolved”
In turn, Kremlin leader Putin publicly states that he is open to ending the war. However, according to him, a "series of complicated issues" must first be resolved before hostilities can stop.
