The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced that new presidential elections are required to sign a memorandum on a ceasefire in Ukraine. This was officially stated by the head of the ministry's legal department, Maxim Musykhin.
According to Musykhin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has lost the legitimacy of his position and does not have the right to sign international documents. According to him, documents of international importance should be signed by a person who has a popular mandate and full legal trust.
The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry also noted that the current speaker of the Ukrainian parliament may also have the right to sign documents of international importance. His comments have attracted the attention of the international community.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has also repeatedly demanded new presidential elections in Ukraine. In March, he proposed the introduction of interim government in Ukraine under the supervision of the UN and other authoritative international organizations, through which fair elections would be held, and then signing legal documents recognized by the international community.
At the same time, Putin had previously called Zelensky a "former head of state" and refused to sign any peace agreement with him. According to the Russian leader, Zelensky has lost his legal authority, which calls into question the international legal force of the documents he signs.
Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga sharply criticized Russia's position. He stressed that the Kremlin's doubts about Zelensky's legitimacy are unfounded and absurd. Sybiga recalled that during the Kremlin's quarter-century of rule, Ukraine has held several fair elections and peacefully exchanged heads of state.
These discussions once again demonstrate the tension in the international political arena of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Currently, the international community has different views on this issue and continues to monitor the situation.
