Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi opens the world's highest railway arch bridge in Reasi district
On Friday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the world’s highest railway arch bridge — the “Chenab River Railway Bridge” — as well as India’s first cable-stayed bridge — the “Anji Bridge” in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir.

As a mark of respect, Prime Minister Modi unfurled the national flag of India — the Tricolor — and walked with it across the Chenab River bridge. Attending the inauguration were the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and Indian Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Before the formal opening, the Prime Minister inspected the arch bridge. During the event, Modi also met and spoke with Omar Abdullah, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and State Minister Jitendra Singh. He also interacted with the workers involved in the USBRL project.

Both bridges are part of the large-scale Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project in Jammu and Kashmir.

The iconic Chenab River bridge — part of the Katra–Sangaldan section — connects New Delhi to Kashmir via Katra. Located in Reasi district, the bridge stands 359 meters above the riverbed, making it the tallest railway arch bridge in the world. For the first time in history, it will provide railway connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India.

The USBRL project faced numerous engineering and logistical challenges due to difficult terrain and the region’s seismic activity. However, after years of dedicated work, the bridge has become a symbol of India's technological strength and commitment to inclusive development.

This event marks a new era in national infrastructure, paving the way for enhanced connectivity, economic growth, and social integration.

Additionally, PM Modi will soon inaugurate two high-speed Vande Bharat trains running between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar. These will offer fast, convenient, and reliable transport for locals, tourists, and pilgrims.

The Prime Minister will also officially dedicate the USBRL railway project to the nation. The project spans 272 km, costs around ₹43,780 crore, and includes 36 tunnels (totaling 119 km) and 943 bridges. It ensures year-round, uninterrupted railway access to the Kashmir Valley and is expected to transform the region’s mobility and social-economic integration.
