Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a frank statement in an interview with ABC News about a decision that is extremely important for the country's security. According to him, the Ukrainian side hoped to receive 20 thousand missiles from the United States to combat the Shahed drones, but these missiles were sent in a different direction - to the Middle East.
“We have a very big problem with the Shahed drones. They are aggressive, accurate and dangerous. We fight them every day, but to fight them effectively, we need a technological advantage. And we had such an opportunity - the United States should have delivered 20 thousand missiles,” Zelenskyy said.
He noted that the decision to deliver these missiles was made by the Joe Biden administration, and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also collaborated on this plan. Ukraine saw this project as a key part of its defense strategy.
However, Zelenskyy revealed information he received from the Ukrainian Defense Minister early this morning that the United States had directed these missiles to the Middle East. “This is not only surprising for us, but also a very dangerous scenario,” he said.
It should be recalled that the Iranian-made Shahed drones have emerged as a new strategic weapon in Russia’s war against Ukraine. They have a range of up to 2,000 kilometers, can hit a precise target, and have a powerful impact with the above explosive load. Its main problem is that it moves with a high noise level, which is why it has been nicknamed “moped” among Ukrainians.
According to Ukrainian officials, these missiles could effectively destroy the Shahed drones and play a decisive role in ensuring the country’s security.
