The US plans to send around 9,000 illegal migrants to the prison at the Guantanamo military base in Cuba, according to nova24.uz, citing The Washington Post.
The migrants include citizens from the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, and Haiti. They are currently undergoing medical checks to assess suitability for transfer.
The decision appears linked to overcrowding in US prisons due to tougher immigration policies under Trump. Previously, the former president proposed deporting up to 30,000 migrants, temporarily housing them in Cuba.
Reports suggest US authorities may not inform allied countries about the transfer of their nationals to Guantanamo.
The prison, opened in 2002 to hold terrorism suspects, has been widely criticized by human rights organizations for repeated abuses and legal violations.
