Once again, a sharp and dangerous situation has arisen in the Middle East. It is being seriously analyzed that the government led by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is intensifying military actions against Iran and, in this process, is also trying to directly involve the United States. According to Professor Shahram Akbarzadeh of Deakin University in Australia, the armed confrontation between Israel and Iran will not only continue but will also engulf the entire region. In his opinion, the US will inevitably be drawn into the conflict due to its obligation to guarantee Israel’s security.
In fact, as Akbarzadeh emphasizes, Netanyahu’s main goal is precisely this—to turn the United States into an active participant in the conflict and to strive to overthrow the government in Iran. These thoughts were expressed in an interview given to the Al Jazeera TV channel and are of great importance in clarifying the complexity of the political situation in the region.
The large-scale airstrikes carried out by the Israeli army on the morning of June 13, 2025, were known in advance to the administration of US President Donald Trump, but the American side officially emphasized that it did not participate in this operation. At the same time, Professor Muhammad Bazzi, head of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at New York University, believes that this operation was carried out with Trump’s indirect consent.
In Bazzi’s analytical article published in The Guardian, it is said that Trump is playing on two fronts at the same time: on the one hand, he is conducting peace negotiations with Iran, while on the other, he is providing Israel with full political and financial support for aggression. According to him, during Trump’s presidency, billions of dollars’ worth of weapons were supplied to Israel, and through international organizations, pressure was applied to restrain criticism of Israel.
In this situation, the US has already become a direct participant in the conflict between Israel and Iran. The fact that US special services helped the Israeli army intercept hundreds of missiles fired by Iran at Israel on the night of June 14 can be cited as clear evidence of this.
During these battles, the Israeli side reported strikes directed at nuclear facilities in Iran. However, official Tehran stated that these strikes did not cause serious damage to underground nuclear facilities, and all main sites remained intact. Analysts also point out that Israel does not have sufficient military capability in this matter. In their opinion, to destroy nuclear infrastructure located up to 60 meters underground, strategic bombers such as the US B-2A or B-52H and special bunker-busting bombs are required. Only the US possesses these.
Another noteworthy aspect is that this operation took place at a time when diplomatic negotiations regarding nuclear agreements between the US and Iran had reached an intense stage. A few days earlier, Trump had emphasized the importance of reaching an agreement through diplomacy and had said he had not allowed Israel to attack. However, it seems that Israel did not take these words into account.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, speaking on behalf of official Tehran, accused the US government of hypocrisy and deception. According to him, after such barbaric actions by Israel, it is pointless to hold any kind of peaceful negotiations with Washington.
Meanwhile, Iranian officials have warned that US military bases in the Middle East may also become one of the targets of attacks. Netanyahu, in turn, created serious alarm with his statement that “the military operation will continue as long as necessary.” Trump, taking advantage of this situation, announced that he would give Tehran a “second chance.”
Analysts emphasize that for Netanyahu, this war has become a tool to prolong his political life. He links his staying in power to the war against Iran, and it is noted that he is also drawing Trump into this path. This war may have serious consequences not only in the region but also on a global scale.
According to available information, in the Israeli airstrikes on the morning of June 13, 78 Iranian citizens, including high-ranking military personnel and nuclear specialists, were killed. 320 people were injured. In response, in the missile attack carried out by the Iranian side on the night of June 14, three Israelis were killed, and 19 were wounded.
The sides exchanged missile strikes again the next day. So far, peace initiatives have not yielded results, and it is clear to everyone that this escalation is dragging the region into a large-scale war. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
