US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky are expected to hold another important meeting during the G7 summit taking place in Canada. This was officially announced by the White House. The fact is, their previous talks have always been accompanied by political tensions and disputes.
The summit began on June 16 and will last until June 17. Zelensky is participating in this prestigious gathering as a guest, and he is scheduled to arrive in Canada on Tuesday. Zelensky’s participation is of great significance, as this time a new page may be opened in US–Ukraine relations.
The two state leaders are meeting for the second time since the beginning of 2025. Their first meeting took place on February 28 at the White House, but it ended in disagreement rather than in an agreement. Zelensky had come to the US to sign an agreement on the development of mineral resources, but due to a verbal argument in front of journalists, he left Washington. After this incident, Trump temporarily suspended military and intelligence aid to Ukraine.
The second meeting, on April 26, took place at the Vatican during the funeral of Pope Francis. This conversation was reportedly more constructive. According to media reports, Zelensky managed to convince Trump to take a tougher position toward Russia, and in Trump’s recent speeches, the Kremlin began to be criticized.
At the same time, since returning to the White House, Trump has not met Russian President Vladimir Putin face-to-face. They have spoken on the phone five times, the latest being on June 14. In that conversation, one of the main topics was not Ukraine, but the current conflict between Israel and Iran.
In recent months, Zelensky has expressed serious concern about the “warming” between the US and Russia. On June 12, the Ukrainian leader sharply criticized the US State Department’s congratulatory message on Russia Day, calling such a step “unpleasant.” According to him, it is unacceptable for an ally like the US to congratulate a country that threatens Ukraine’s independence.
In an interview with Newsmax TV on June 14, Zelensky called the Moscow–Washington dialogue “a very warm conversation.” In his opinion, “Putin does not intend to end the war and may eventually deceive Trump.”
What results the next Trump–Zelensky meeting in Canada will bring, whether US support for Ukraine will be restored, or whether a new period of pressure will begin for Kyiv — these questions will be answered in the coming days. One thing is clear: the world is watching this meeting with great interest and excitement. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
